What happens at a hypnotherapy session.

There is a comfortable chair, a glass of water and a box of tissues.

At the first session the following explanation is given to ensure every client understands what is happening.

You have a brain, a mind that is very clever and very powerful.  It is so powerful that it makes all the organs of your body work without you even thinking about it.  Your mind is made up of a collection of your life experience.  You are unique. So what people have said to you, what you have seen, heard, tasted, felt – all creates programmes in your mind just like a computer.  Like robots, we have to obey our computer programs.  So if we want to change our behaviour we have to change the computer programs and that is what we can do with hypnosis.  In a calm relaxed state you will reprogramme yourself.  Does that make sense?

Hypnotherapists cannot make you do anything you do not want to do.  We cannot make you rob a bank or act outside your own moral compass.  If your mother, friend or partner drags you in with you kicking and screaming and they say “Please Robin change…..” it cannot be done.  But because you come and say Robin I am fed up and want to change, I will help you to be different.

You will not be made unconscious. We will not knock you out.  You will relax in the chair, and in that relaxed hypnotic state you will reprogramme.   Does that also make sense?

There is a fresh glass of water for you and a box of tissues in case I make your eyes water.  Hypnosis is an emotional roller coaster ride.  That’s ok.  Let the emotions come and we will take care of them.

At any subsequent session. the conditions will be the same but many clients will relax even deeper because those initial nerves have disappeared and they have a reasonable idea of what to expect.
