By using hypnosis, and the suggestions that follow, you will be helped to change your lifestyle and the way you deal with everyday stressful events in your life.
1. Stress is essential. Stress is what keeps us on our toes and out of danger. We need to be alert at various times every day — crossing the road, anticipating situations that can cause injury to us or our family or facing any of the interesting and challenging things of life. But what is interesting and challenging to one person may be a source of misery to another.
2. Distress is the feeling we all get when we cannot cope with stress any longer. Life situations that were stressful in the past which we used to take in our stride suddenly become distressing. A new life situation such as separation, bereavement or redundancy can cause distress if we do not skill to deal with it. Hypnosis can teach the mental strength and coping skills needed.
3. Does your mind beat you up? Do you have an inner voice that says “I have to please everyone” – “I shouldn’t have to ask for help” – “I must not make any mistakes” – “I should put everybody else’s needs first.” Your mind is conditioned by what you have been taught to believe is real and true. There is a new truth and a new reality that you will learn in my hypnosis sessions. You can change the way your mind talks to you.
4. When is stress a problem? Stress occurs when the demands from others, on ourselves, are more than the resources we have available to deal with them. Imagine you had to complete a complicated programme on a computer within a week or make a speech in public tomorrow. This task will be fine provided to you know how to do it, you want to do it, you have the skill and material to do it, the time and space and the help of someone if necessary. If any of these requirements are missing you are likely to experience stress.
5 What can you do to relieve stress? First you need to recognise when you get stressed. Keep a stress diary for a week and note the time of day, signs of stress, how you felt and what action you took e.g., had a drink, lost your temper, smoked. Following my hypnotherapy you will have additional skills to handle the stress in positive ways.
6. What will stress do to your body? Your body has an inbuilt fight-or-flight response that releases alarm hormones to keep you safe when your mind perceives harmful situations. Feelings of stress releases these hormones but constant release is unhealthy resulting in heart problems, ulcers, tiredness, fatigue, headaches, loss of sex drive and other physical symptoms.
7. How to deal with stress. There are lots of different ways to handle stressful situations – concentration, breathing, meditation or listening to music to name a few. There is one or more practice that will work for you – even an “Emergency Relaxation Method”. As part of the hypnosis treatment I will teach you safe and quick methods to relax your mind and body. This will stop your mind beating you up and reduce the release of the alarm hormones into your body so you quickly return to a normal state.
8. Review your life situation. Ask yourself questions and be truthful with your answers. Is your boss asking too much of you? Do you lack sufficient support in your work or at home? Do you have to do everything for your family? Are there things they can do for themselves? Are your friends expecting too much of you? Don’t just think about these and other questions that affect your present life — write them down AND then write solutions – one of which could be hypnotherapy with me.
9. Exercise your Bill of Rights. I will teach you in hypnosis that you can say:-
I have the right to express my feelings.
I have the right to say yes and no for myself.
I have the right to ask for what I want – including help.
I have the right to be treated with respect as an intelligent, capable and equal human being.
I have the right to make mistakes.
I have the right to say I do not understand.
I have the right to decline responsibility for other people’s problems.
I don’t need anyone’s approval to do what I want to do.
Hypnotherapy is not a panacea for all ills but by reprogramming the mind can help control and alleviate the destructive effects of stress.
